Year 1 and 2 Scatterball Competition

On Wednesday 27th June, 8 very excited year 1 and 2 children headed off to a Scatterball competition where 9 schools in total were competing.  For most, it was the first time they had represented their school in an external tournament.

The schools were split into 3 groups.  In our group our opponents were South View and Hurstbourne Tarrant.  Our first match being South View.  We were nervous but knew our plan, took our positions and fielded well.  We knew we had to beat 7 rounders and encouraging each other, we managed 10.  South View then played Hurstbourne Tarrant with South View winning 9-7.  Our final match was so close, it was very tense and we managed another win, 5-4.  This made us winners of our group and we then had to play the winners of Group 1.  Sherborne St John.

Fielding first we were shocked to see that Sherborne St John were kicking the ball.  This was in the rules but a strategy we had not practiced.  We did not panic!  We stuck to our game plan in what was nerve wracking game.  The match ended in a draw 6-6.  Each school then had to pick 2 players in a nail biting tie-break.  Again, it was a 2-2 draw.  Finally, we both had to pick 1 player - another draw!  The match was decided by the toss of a coin.  Up stepped Zaccary and chose the right toss.  Our children were a credit, as although delighted to have gone through, showed compassion and empathy for Sherborne St John, realising how hard it was for them to go out in this way.

We now had a place in the final against Ruckstall.  We fielded first and Ruckstall managed a magnificent 6 rounders.  The score was 6-5 with our final 'thrower' to go.  With so much cheering and support and under extreme pressure, Amberley missed out on getting her rounder by two steps!

Cliddesden showed exceptional values, giving the winning team 3 cheers.  They were encouraging and supportive of each other and were delighted with our second place ranking.

Many thanks to Sam (Bella's Mum) for coming and being an incredibly supportive, hands on coach.
