Chestnut Class - Superheroes

On Tuesday the 18th of October, the children of Cliddesden Primary School, near Basingstoke, Hampshire, were overjoyed when they were treated to a superhero talk from an ex head teacher Simon Cushing.  This was part of their exciting topic work in year 3 and 4.

Many children dressed up for the event and really enjoyed coming into school as their favourite superhero characters or heroes of their own that they had created.  Mrs Green, who is the children's teacher, said "It was an excellent day and the children really enjoyed themselves."  "Everybody loves superheroes," she added.  Each child dressed up in a different costume and made a real effort to look like superheroes.

The children were engaged by a superhero talk about different comic heroes, comics and toys. A particular favourite was the life size Batman model, which the children had their photos with.  "The toys and models were brilliant to look at and they were very fun too!"

Simon explained that as a child he disliked reading but this changed once he discovered comics about Superheroes.  Simon shared his large and varied comic collection with the children who were fascinated to hear about the characters in Marvel and DC comics and how ideas for the back stories were often copied and repeated time and again.  The front covers were very colourful and bold.  He told the children how this inspired him to create Pop Art of his own.  "Pop Art is very creative and colourful," Simon said enthusiastically.

The children will continue to learn about Superheroes, although they will now be moving on to learn about Black History Month and heroes who fought for black rights.

The children will also be writing their own newspaper reports in Literacy lessons.
