Pumeza Mandela

On Tuesday the 12th of April, 6 members of the key stage 2 student council visited Manor Field Junior School to have an activity morning chatting to Pumeza Mandela, and her assistant, from the Nelson Mandela museum, based in South Africa.

Who is Pumeza Mandela?

Pumeza is the administer for the UNCRC and works at the Nelson Mandela Museum. The UNCRC is the organisation that wrote the convention of children’s rights, now used by UNICEF. Pumeza is also the great niece of famous freedom fighter, Nelson Mandela.

What we did:

During this educational event, each key stage worked through a series of activities, and were told a story, about being a refugee, called “Uncle Ali’s House”. This story made us realise the struggles that refugees have to go through. One of the many activities we took part in involved comparing differences between refugees in modern day and early First World War. Another activity we completed involved drawing a line from a variety of words and matching with a picture and describing how Nelson Mandela felt at that particular moment in time.

All in all, this trip was very educational and it is of upmost importance that other children learn about this tricky subject. We all thanked Pumeza Mandela and her assistant for making the journey from South Africa to teach us about her relative’s beliefs and achievements for his people.
