Oak Class visit QMC

On Monday 28th September Oak class visited QMC as part of our science topic on circuits. When we arrived the class had the opportunity to make circuits using light bulbs, switches, buzzers, batteries, motors and wires.

There were four main activities which we took part in.

We had to make a burglar alarm using tin foil and two pieces of cardboard as the switch. We attached our alarms to a cupboard door and when we opened them and the two pieces of foil touched the buzzer went off it was very noisy but successful.

The second activity was to make a hospital

alarm for a nurses station which needed to switch between sounding an alarm and turning on a light bulb. We used a selection switch which we had not had the opportunity to use before and this allowed the user to control either the light bulb or buzzer.

We also completed an investigation using decibel meters; we had to create a simple circuit with a buzzer. One of our team held the buzzer at the end of a long cardboard tube and another held the decibel meter at the other end. The purpose of this investigation was to investigate if the more batteries used made a difference to the volume and pitch of the buzzer.

The last investigation involved testing different lengths and widths of wires to find out which conducted electricity most effectively. We used a bulb to see how far the electricity travelled and how powerful it was at certain distances.

We had a lovely morning and learnt lots of new key words and facts about circuits which we can use in our science work.
