Class G visit Farleigh House Gardens

Report by:

Faith, Mia and Olivia

On Wednesday 2nd July Class G walked up the drove to Farleigh House to meet Andrew Woolley, head gardener for Lord Portsmouth as part of our topic- Global Gardens. The trip was designed for us to learn about seasoning plants and planning a garden over a number of years.

The tour started in the formal gardens when Andrew explained about how the planting is planned many years in advance to make sure the garden is visually beautiful all year round. The entrance to the formal gardens was two iron gates with one always open to make the garden feel more welcoming.

One of the most interesting facts was how the gardens flowed. From the first garden, our eyes were drawn to an impressive fountain with a whale sculpture. In the far distance we could see some bushes had been shaped as waves and seagulls giving the illusion that the gardens were closer than they actually were. Andrew explained these gardens had been planned over ten years ago.

One of our most interesting sights was a clipping from the apple tree Sir Isaac Newton sat under when he discovered how a force called gravity works. There is only three clippings in the world and Lord Portsmouth owns two of them. This is because he is related to Isaac Newton.

We thoroughly enjoyed this trip and we thought it was a great learning experience and rate it 10/10.
