The Living Rainforest - by Amanda

On Thursday 17th July we visited the Living Rainforest.  Before we entered the greenhouses (where the plants and animals were kept) we had a health and safety talk.  Kirsty, the educational leader, told us not to touch any plants and to mind the animals. Afterwards we got sent to our guide, the Year 3’s had Diane, the Year 4’s had Tamsin.  We stepped into the first greenhouse where immediately I felt hot and sticky.  Tamsin led us around and told us about the plants, the first one was the coffee plant. Tamsin passed round a pot of coffee beans so we could smell them, some people didn’t want to let it go, others passed it on as quickly as they could.  We also went to the chocolate plant, Tamsin also passed round a pot, this time it had cocoa beans in it.

We went to the Vanilla plant as well where Tamsin then passed round a pot of dried Vanilla. At the end of the tour Tamsim asked us what would we have as a three course meal from the rainforest. The starter was snails, the main was monkey and the dessert was chocolate.  Afterwards we had lunch and then we got put into groups to explore on our own.

Again, as soon as I stepped in I felt hot and sticky.  In my group there was Nikhila, James B, Corey and Jack.  We (my group) wandered around reading about the plants. We found a Swiss cheese plant which was edible and toxic!  We also saw a dwarf crocodile and three birds running off.  My group wanted to see a sloth although it was hidden. Before long it was time to go.
