Life Bus

The Life Education Mobile Classroom visited our school on Tuesday 17th November.

Life Education is a charity providing health and drug education support to schools. The specially equipped classroom provided an unforgettable experience for the children whilst contributing to our Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship curriculum. The fun, interactive and age-appropriate programmes helped children to understand the wonders of the human body and how to look after it.

Key Stage 1 talked about healthy eating, being a good friend and the safe use of medicines whilst Key Stage 2 considered the effects and risks associated with the use of drugs, including medicines, alcohol and tobacco.  In addition, children thought about friendship skills and how to cope with bullying and peer pressure.

Willow Class

We enjoyed meeting Harold the giraffe and helping him to keep fit and healthy. The children looked inside their bodies by putting the internal parts of the body on a body suit. We also discussed our safety and only letting adults give us the right amount of medicine when we are poorly.

Beech Class

Harold the giraffe talked to us about healthy eating and about all of the different nutrients our bodies need to keep us fit and healthy such as protein, fats and carbohydrates.  He also explained how important it was to have the right amount of medicine to make us better.

Talia, Year 2

Chestnut Class

First we met Tam the human model to see what was inside our bodies. All the organs in Tam’s body lit up when you touched them. But with the brain, you couldn’t touch it. You had to touch your head and say “Brain! Brain! Turn on!” Then Tam’s brain lit up.

Next, we learnt about how smoking could harm your lungs because it has tar in it.  The tar sticks to the air pockets in your lungs and stops your body from getting enough oxygen.

Then we met the brain of the mobile classroom and he showed us some pictures, lights and stars on the celling to show us he really was the brain of the mobile classroom and then he put on a song for us to dance to. The brain showed us a picture of our nervous system. We made a line of children with Luke at the top as the brain. Charlotte was at the other end pretending to be the hand. We had to send a message to the hand from the brain, through the children, telling the hand to wave.

Finally, we met Harold the Giraffe. He wanted to enter a talent competition but there was only one space left and his friend Derek wanted to enter too. We helped him figure out that they could work together as a double act.

We really enjoyed our lesson in the mobile classroom!

Alex and Emily, Year 4

Oak Class

Today in the Life Bus we learnt about 'peer pressure' and how we should learn to say 'no' when tempted or encouraged to do something we know is wrong.

This led onto a discussion about legal and illegal drugs; how it was important that medication should be taken as prescribed and what effect drugs such as tobacco and alcohol could have on our health.
