Chestnut Class visit QMC

Report by:

Katie - Year 4

Chestnut class went to QMC at 9:00am.There where two mini buses and two cars taking us up there. We learned about magnetic forces. We all did five different activities and got set in groups.

The five different activities were:

1)     The Mr Strong experiment

2)     The fishing game

3)     Patterns

4)     Attract and Repel

5)     Playing with magnets

This trip was the best trip ever. We all enjoyed it.

Maybe if you work in a class you should go there.

Mr Strong

Mr Strong is a cuddly toy with magnets on each hand, he can climb up a metal bin to rescue Rapunzel. The Mr Strong experiment is where you put card under Mr Strong’s hand and see how many he can carry. The beads test is where you put a bag around him and see how many he can carry.

The scores for our group were:

Card: 13

Beads: 70

The fishing game

We all chose a colour and got a stencil of a fish we all drew round it. Then we cut it out and pushed a staple in it. Next we made the fishing rope with a straw, string or wool and a tiny magnet. When we finished the fishing rod we got a plastic cup and decorated it like the sea with stainable pens. The game is to see how many fish you can get out of the sea.

Patterns

We made patterns using metal chippings with oil and because the metal was attracted to the magnet it made beautiful patterns. Some of us drew pictures of the patterns we had created.

Attract and Repel

We sorted the objects into groups such as attract and repel. Eryn did a trick when she put a paperclip in a piece of foil and made the magnet attract. If you put a paperclip under or over a table and a magnet on the opposite side and move it around so the paperclip moves on its own. When Katie put the magnet under the table and the paperclip on top she moved it around and scared Miss Copping.

Playing with magnets

We all played with magnets and tested some things. Tip never put a magnet close to a computer.
