Beech Class visit QMC

Beech Class spent a thoroughly enjoyable morning at QMC Science Centre finding out lots of information about animals.  We split into 4 groups and enjoyed the following activities:

We learnt that vertebrates are animals that have an internal skeleton but can be sorted using their external features.  We looked at their body covering, did the animal have fins or webbed feet that fit with the body covering?

We enjoyed sorting the animals into mammals, reptiles, birds, fish and amphibians.

We identified that there are lots of animals around us.  Pets, animals that produce food and others that live in the wild.

We had a selection of animals that we had to match with their environment.  We then identified their babies, worked out the names of their homes and what groups of different animals are called.

We enjoyed sorting the life cycles of various animals.  Butterflies, meal worms and silk worms.  We also looked at and named the life stages of a human.  It was interesting to see how different adult animals/humans are

to their babies.

We were intrigued by the different characteristics of vertebrate. Each type of vertebrate has a unique set of characteristics that determines which class of vertebrate the animal belongs.  We worked out the classes by looking at reproduction, body covering, how they fed, were they hot or cold blooded and how the animal respires.
