Oak Class - From Farm to Fork

On Wednesday 3rd December a lady called Julie, from Tesco Chineham, came to talk to Oak Class about a Tesco educational project ‘From Farm to Fork’ to link in with our Global Village topic and Food Technology project. ‘From Farm to Fork’ is about educating children where their food comes from around the world and how Tesco like to source their food locally and choose foods for their shop floor by what is in season- this is called seasonality.

Oak Class took part in many different activities throughout the afternoon, including:

  • Locating where fruits and vegetables come from around the world on a world map.
  • Designing a healthy menu, including a starter, main and desert, form ingredients that are in season now.
  • A cheese game- the children had to match a particular cheese to a country and then decide whether cheeses given were hard, soft, blended or blue cheeses.
  • They then got to taste a variety of breads and cheeses from around the world, including: brioche, naan bread, pitta bread, ciabatta bread and cheeses including: soft cheese, blended cheese, hard cheese and blue cheese- this is known as the smelly cheese!

Oak Class also had the opportunity to hold fresh seasonal fish- this was squidgy and made some of the children squirm! They held fish including: tuna, lobsters, mackerel and salmon.

Overall Oak Class had a fun afternoon learning about food from different countries and how foods can be locally sourced if they are in season.  We are hoping that Julie will be able to work with us again in the near future.
