Oak Class visit QMC

On Monday 26th January, Oak class visited QMC and took part in a variety of science experiments which were all based around our science topic, forces. Everyone took part in four investigations over the morning.

The first focused on air resistance; for this one we each created a parachute (of different sizes) and tested how fast the parachute would fall to the floor.

The second investigation looked at buoyancy – the children tested whether objects would float or sink and why. We looked at how the surface area of an object affected its buoyancy.

Next, we took part in a friction investigation where we learnt that knots increase the friction of a piece of rope – we tied rope around a mooring bollard and observed that friction is made between the surface of the bollard and the rope.

The final investigation looked at water resistance – we learnt that water resistance slows objects down as they move through water. For this investigation we tested different shaped boat hulls to see whether or not some shapes moved more easily through the water.

We are now looking forward to following up this work in our Science lessons.
