Willow Class visit QMC

On our enjoyable trip to QMC Science Centre we investigated materials. We rotated around 4 different activities.

  1. We investigated wood; we looked carefully at how it is formed using magnifying glasses. We explored whether wood could make a light bulb light up on our space ship, it did not!
  2. We compared and investigated plastic and metal. We found out they are both waterproof but only metal completed the circuit and made the light bulb light up, not plastic. We tested each material in boiling water. We found metal foil stayed the same whereas plastic changed shape.
  3. We explored how different materials can change. Ice melted really quickly when heated on a hot plate but much slower just in a bowl. We watched how wax melted but then turned back into a solid when left to cool.
  4. Finally, we investigated which material would be the best at making a bag to carry moon rocks, we wanted one that packed away small so we could take as many as we could on our space ship. The groups tested how strong the material is and how small it packs up. We found polyester bags packed up the smallest and card was much stronger than paper.
