Year 5 visit Brighton Hill Community School

Report by:  Mrs Garland

We started our day along with other schools, being greeted by the young leaders who were going to stay with us and support the children throughout the day.

Our first lesson was in the music department learning about Samba and where it originates from. Children had the opportunity to explore instruments that are mainly used in Samba and then worked hard on repeating a rhythm and adding their own ending to create an ensemble which they performed together. Their teacher, Miss Rowe, commented on how well they had all listened enabling them to produce a good final piece.

Dance after a short break, looking at different styles of dance from around the world and what children knew. We then focused on Bollywood and watched a short composition on the screen. Children went on to learn a set Bollywood routine, then working in their chosen groups added two different formations. They had time to practice and then performed their routines to each other.

Third period was tech. We worked in textiles using paper, concentrating on weaving techniques. Children started with eight pieces of paper, folding them lengthways and sticking sides down. They then used these to weave together, some carried on to make a flat weave, while some tried to make a basket with excellent results, again the teacher commented on how well they had concentrated.

Lunch was ate quickly by lots of hungry children followed by some free time on the field, where our lovely young leaders had prepared some games and outside resources.

Science was our last lesson of the day. Children were given the challenge of making a skyscraper that you would be able to land a helicopter on using spaghetti, a balloon and jelly babies. Children formed their own groups of 4/5 and worked as a team to complete this task. They were up against each other to produce the tallest but also making sure it was stable. Some groups worked hard at this while others needed support from our young leaders to stay on task.

The day ended in the community hall with a celebration of the day praising the students who had spent their time showing us round, answering questions and joining in with us in our lessons. Year 5’s were presented with certificates awarded by the individual class teachers to those who had shown courage, determination or excellence in the subjects visited today.
