Oak Class trip to Singh Sabha Gudwara

Report by:  Amanda, Year 6

On Tuesday 20th October, Oak Class visited a Sikh temple called Singh Sabha Gudwara, located in Southampton.

After the coach journey (inside the temple) the first thing Oak Class had to do was take off their shoes and put on their head scarves, we had to do this because it is part of the Sikh religion to show respect.

Firstly, a presentation was shown to us about:  the Sikh religion, and what people do in it; the Guru's  - who were like the God's for the Sikhs; the Golden Temple and the history of Sikhism.

After lunch - and a taste of rice and lentils if you wanted - the class entered the upstairs room of the temple, where the Guru (the holy book) was, to do sketching.  We were allowed to sketch the area where the book lay, which was extremely intricately designed.

On the trip Oak Class learnt many things - like you can't turn your back on the Guru; the bed of which the Guru is put on every night costs £6,000 and when the book is being carried, it has to be held above the priest's head.

To conclude, it was a very fun trip and everyone thoroughly enjoyed it.
