Subbuteo World Cup

An alternative 2014 World Cup was staged in our school when we organised our own Subbuteo World Cup competition!

32 boys and girls in KS2 drew lots to represent each of the teams in the FIFA competition. Group matches, second round, quarter and semi final matches were all played in the four weeks leading up to the final on Wednesday 9th July 2014.

The competition was played to the old Subbuteo rules using traditional HW bases on two mounted pitches which were set up each lunchtime.

10 minutes each way ensured the games were completed and everything was packed away in time for afternoon lessons! For many students, this was their first experience with Subbuteo and it was great to see how their skills developed across the competition.

Eventual winner, Elliot is seen here with fellow finalist Tom Lavender who was competing in the final on his 11th birthday. Both players had won through convincingly in each round to make the final an exciting game to watch. Elliot did not concede during the entire competition and won the final 4-0 to receive a replica model of the World Cup.

So did England make it to the final in Cliddesden? Not on this occasion, the final was contested by Columbia and Algeria with Columbia running out the eventual winners!

The boys will also be looking to get some games in with some of the England Junior players at Kent Invicta over the summer as a reward for their efforts and to enhance their skills!
