Architecture Workshops

In today’s architecture session we used canes and elastic bands to make constructions. We started by joining 3 canes with one band to create a tripod. The tripod was quite stable and would stand up by itself.

Then we added another cane and band to make a tetrapod, which looked like a tent! This had lots of tension and torsion, which meant the canes were trying to twist away from being a tetrapod. It didn’t want to stand up by itself and we had to hold it steady.

However, by adding two further elastic bands and the final sixth cane, we created a tetrahedron. This had 4 equilateral triangles and was able to stand up.

We then combined 4 of these tetrahedrons to create a larger tetrahedron in groups. We had to look carefully to find all the triangular shapes created by this new structure. In total we found 24 triangles.

Finally, some of us, combined 4 of the larger tetrahedrons to create a giant tetrahedron. By joining the vertices, we had created a very large, stable structure!
