Taekwondo

We were very lucky to welcome another visitor from the Sainsbury’s Active Kids team, this time to teach us some Tae Kwon Do. Taekwondo is a Korean martial art which is a mixture of combat and self- defence techniques as well as a fun exercise!

We started off with some stretches to warm our bodies up. Some children stretched their legs so well they nearly did the splits! It is important for Taekwondo to warm up our bodies and our muscles before starting, so we don’t hurt ourselves. Once we were warmed up, we were ready to think about some of the moves.

We practised some punches in the air, and couple of different kicks, and we were shown how to safely move our legs and feet so that we didn’t hurt anybody. Then we got to practise these moves on a paddle, held (very bravely) by our teachers! At first, we counted our moves in English, but soon we moved on to using Korean numbers.

Finally, we worked in pairs to show off our new moves. You always bow to your partner before starting Taekwondo and you must shake their hand at the end to show respect.

We thoroughly enjoyed having a go at something different!
