Heartstart

Just before half term, the whole school took part in a first aid workshops with Heartstart.

We talked about the first things we should do if we come across an emergency and we used a helpful acronym to help us remember what to do. D stood for DANGER! The first thing we must do if we see a person who is feeling poorly is to check for danger. Next was R which stood for RESPONSE. Bryan showed us how to check for a response from our patient by gently shaking their shoulders and calling to them in both ears. If it is a baby then we should tickle their toes until they giggle. Finally we had S, which reminded us to SHOUT FOR HELP! We should always shout for help or phone for an ambulance once we have got a response from our patient.

Finally we looked at the start of another acronym – ABC. We learnt that the A stands for airways, B is for breathing and C is circulation. We thought about things that might block our patient’s airway and how we could help. Bryan showed us the recovery position and we practised putting our partners in the recovery position.

Now we know what to do if we ever come across a very poorly person!
