Chestnut Class visit The SeaCity Museum

On Tuesday 22nd June, Chestnut Class visited the SeaCity Museum in Southampton. When we arrived, we had a guided tour of the Titanic Story exhibition. We impressed the tour guide with our knowledge of the Titanic and also learnt lots of new facts.

After the tour, we took part in a workshop where we rotated around four stations. We had the opportunity to look at and hold artefacts from the Titanic, trying to guess what each one was and what it was used for. Secondly, we had the challenge of deciding who we would put on the lifeboats, making sure the woman and children were on first and there was a crew member to row. After that, we learnt more about what it would have looked and sounded like onboard the ship using photographs and sound boxes - we learnt that the boiler room had 29 boilers! Finally, we investigated how many leaking compartments it takes to sink a ship using a pipette and an icecube tray.

At the end of our workshop, four of us dressed up at people from the Titanic (Captain Edward Smith, Ida Strauss, Violet Jessop and Archie Jewell) as we learned about their journey.

After lunch, we had a self-guided tour around the two exhibitions of the museum: Southampton’s Titanic Story, our history topic and Gateway to the World, our Geography topic. While looking around the exhibitions, we had to find specific artefacts and people in order to answers questions.

Overall, we had a fantastic day sharing our existing knowledge and learning new facts.
