Welcome to Oak Class. We are a mixed Year 5 and 6 class and we range from 9 to 11 years old. Our class teacher is Mrs Montgomerie. We are supported in class by Mrs Hussey, our HLTA (Higher Learning Teaching Assistant). We are also supported by Mrs Wood and Mrs Duffy.
This half-term we will be learning about the Shang dynasty of China in History. We will start by working out when the Shang dynasty was, using timelines, and then move on to comparing what was happening in Britain at the same time. Our Art work will be based on the patterns, decorations and artists of the orient, including calligraphy.
In French, we will learn how to name the planets and compare them using simple adjectives. This will complement our Science work this term, where we will be learning about Space. Our English work will be loosely linked to topics covered in the foundation subjects and we will use a range of texts as a stimulus for reading, writing and learning more about grammar. We will also be learning the violin in our music lessons, led by a teacher from Hampshire Music Service, and we hope to be able to share our musical progress in some form at the end of half-term.
This term we will set spellings with a weekly focus on a particular phoneme. In class, we will do a daily activity to teach and practise these, but children should still practise their spellings over the weekend. They will be tested on Monday to see if they apply the correct spelling pattern of each phoneme within their spelling word.
Times tables should also be practised at home (using the Times Tables Rockstars website) and will be tested in school on Fridays.
PE is on Thursday and Friday. On Thursday we would like the children to come to school in their uniforms and bring their PE kits with them to change into. On Friday, we would like the children to come to school in their PE kits.
Curriculum Overview Autumn 2021
As part of our work in Design & Technology, we created working models of fairground rides. Our next step is to use coding software to write a program which will control our model, using a small computer called a crumble.
