SLS Recommended Reading Books
Welcome to Oak Class. We are a mixed Year 5 and 6 class and we range from 9 to 11 years old. Our class teacher is Mrs Montgomerie. We are supported in class by Mrs Hussey, our HLTA (Higher Learning Teaching Assistant). We are also supported by Mrs Wood and Mrs Duffy.
This half-term our Geography topic will help us to develop our knowledge of the United Kingdom. We will find out more about the physical and human geography of our country and our place in the world, as well as looking at reasons why visitors come to Britain. We will also do some brief research, using our History skills, to help us learn about Queen Elizabeth II in advance of celebrating her platinum jubilee at the end of half term. We will find out more about the 1970s and we will improve our cooking skills by designing and making biscuits using seasonal ingredients, if possible, linking in with our DT work.
In French, we will learn some vocabulary that we may need to visit a café. Our Science work will help us to think about states of matter and how to separate materials using their properties. As well as developing our writing skills, we will also practise our dramatic skills in English - we will soon start rehearsing our end of year production 'Rock Bottom', which will be an all-singing, all-dancing comedy! We can't wait to share it with you all at the end of term.
What Oak Class have been learning this week.
In Oak this week, now that SATS are over, we have been doing a lot of writing! We have tried to write our own version of a video called 'The Eye of the Storm', using descriptive language. In addition, we have also been learning about the life of Queen Elizabeth II, before we celebrate her platinum jubilee next week. In Maths, we have used our area, perimeter and calculation skills to plan and cost a garden design, acting as landscape gardeners. We were lucky yesterday to have an online lesson from the road safety team, which has helped link into the Walk to School week that most of us have tried to join in with.
This term we will set spellings with a weekly focus on a particular phoneme. In class, we will do a daily activity to teach and practise these, but children should still practise their spellings over the weekend. They will be tested on Monday to see if they apply the correct spelling pattern of each phoneme within their spelling word.
Times tables should also be practised at home (using the Times Tables Rockstars website) and will be tested in school on Fridays.
PE is on Thursday and Friday. On Thursday we would like the children to come to school in their uniforms and bring their PE kits with them to change into. On Friday, we would like the children to come to school in their PE kits.
Curriculum Overview Summer 2022
As part of our work in Design & Technology, we created working models of fairground rides. Our next step is to use coding software to write a program which will control our model, using a small computer called a crumble.
