SLS Recommended Reading Books
Books that promote diversity and inclusion
Welcome to Oak Class. We are a mixed Year 5 and 6 class and we range from 9 to 11 years old. Our class teacher is Mrs Montgomerie. Miss Haresign will be teaching us on Tuesday afternoons. We are supported in class by Mrs Busby, Mrs Duffy and Mrs Wood.
This half-term our History topic will help us to find out more about the Early Islamic civilisation. We will find out more about the development of the silk road, the 'House of Wisdom' and discuss the lasting legacy of the civilisation. Our Art work will be based on floral designs. In RE, we shall compare the theme of sacred and what this means in Islamic and Christian teaching. We shall also look at places of worship, and after half-term we shall consider what 'Dukkha' means to Buddhists.
Our Science work will help us to think about how both light and sound travel. We will think about how we can see things, and how sounds can be created and changed. Our Music learning will be helping us to prepare for our end of term production: 'Star Warts'. We will think about how we can use our vocal skills to entertain our audience - and how we can be the very best performers!
Check out out blog every week to see some of our work.
Class Information
All the children have been given a reading journal and homework book. These should be brought back to school every Monday, so we can do the weekly spelling test in the homework book.
Please encourage your child to read daily and remind them to record their reading in their reading journal.
Times tables should also be practised at home (using the Times Tables Rockstars website) and will be tested in school on Fridays.
PE is on Tuesday and Friday. On Tuesday, all children should come to school in their uniform and bring their kit with them. On Friday, we would like the children to wear their PE kits to school. They do not need a change of clothes.
Art
In class we used tracing skills to identify our features using a photograph. We then looked at the work of Andy Warhol as inspiration for our colour choices - some of us used colour to reflect our moods.
