Year 5/6 Football Tournament

On Thursday 12th July our school football team took part in the Basingstoke Schools boys 5-a-side annual competition. 20 schools took part in this tournamnet at Power League.

When we saw that we had St Mary's, St Bede's and Fairfields B team in our group we didn't rate our chances! But we were wrong. Starting well and defeating Fairfields B 2-0 gave us determination and hope. Next were St Bede's who we had played in an earlier competition this year. 1-0 to Cliddesden and we knew then we had progressed from the group stage. The desire now was to win the group and we were up next against last year's winners St Mary's, a school that dominates in local team sports.

What came next was a steamrollering effort from the Yellow and Green army! We smashed it, putting 5 goals past St Mary's and only conceding 1.

In the last 16 we beat Rucstall 4-0 and then in the quarter finals we made short shrift of St Bede's B team. A place in the semi-finals was ours!

We were up against Kings Furlong whose team had no less than 3 district players. A closely fought game was narrowly lost 2-1 and naturally we were disappointed. In the 3rd place play-off St Mary's had their revenge but a lot of this was down to our lads having to play immediately after the earlier defeat with heads still down.

But looking back, reaching the last 4 out of 20 teams - all bigger schools than ours - was an amazing achievement. To make things even better we were awarded the small schools trophy for our efforts. We are very  proud of the 6 boys who took part.
