Book Week

Cliddesden School decided to celebrate World Book Week, by:

  • Daily Buddy Reading, where older children shared their books with the younger children. All the children loved going to visit the other classes and looking at new books with someone new. The older children thought very carefully about which books to choose for the younger readers. They made some excellent choices from our school library.
  • The staff read from their favourite books to different classes. Everyone liked having a different teacher and hearing extracts from The Hobbit, through to Gangsta Granny.
  • KS2 inviting parents into school for writing workshops. Oak class looked at Lewis Carroll made-up words and created a bank of nonsensical words to use in their Lewis Carrol inspired writing. Chestnut class were looking at views through different windows, to inspire them to write amazing descriptions to accompany the illustrations of Jeannie Baker.
  • Having a Cliddesden Weird Write, which involved each class writing a section of a story, entitled Mystery on Bluebeard’s Pirate Ship. The story was pulled together and edited by Oak Class. Mr Davies read the completed whole school story in one of our World Book Day Assemblies. Read it on our website for a very ‘Weird Read’.
  • Running Cliddesden Spelling Bee 2018. Each year group ran a mini spelling bee to find the best speller for their year group. Then we had an exciting final in front of the whole school. It was very tense and the finalist tried very hard. Eventually we were left with 2 children and Olivia from Year 1 won. In second place came Talia (Year 4), with Quinn (FS) coming third. Our other year group winners were Fletcher (Year 6), Harry (year 5), Ewan (Year 3), Zacchary (year 2), and Jonathan (Year 1). Well done everyone. We have super spellers at Cliddesden Primary School.
  • Dressing up for World Book Day, and having character parades in our book sharing assembly. We had lots of Harry Potters, Alice’s, and Disney princesses, as well as a very original idea of an Atlas! Thank-you everyone for looking so amazing.
  • Meeting the Travelling Poet, who visited each class to enthral and inspire the children with great poetry performances.
  • Listening for the bell, then doing some DEAR reading- Drop Everything And Read. It was good fun!
  • Trying to win The Big Book Quiz for our houses.
  • Reading as much as we could to help our sponsored read.

It was a great week. Thank-you to all the parents who helped with costumes, and for everyone continuing to support the love of reading at our school.
