Awesome Education

On Wednesday 24th May 2017, scientists from AWE visited Oak class to teach us about science. At the start of the demonstration, they showed us a bottle of Liquid Nitrogen (which is -196®C!) to show us how cold it is, they dipped a flower in it for a few seconds and when it came out completely frozen, they banged it against the table and it smashed! They then split us into 3 groups that we completed the separate activities in.

The first activity was making your own lava lamp, in pairs we poured in mixture of water, oil, food colouring and Alka-Seltzer tablets. When we added in the tablets it looked like a volcano erupting. We then had another look at the Liquid Nitrogen, this time they got a lolly, which had melted in the sun, and dipped it in there. Amazingly, after a short amount of time it had turned back into a completely frozen lolly.

At the next activity station we made our own Magnetic Slime. It was made up of everyday household items like baby powder mixed together with PVA glue. When we tested it against a magnet, it proved to be magnetic!

At the third station we got to see if we could make a lemon power a small LED light. It was very difficult trying to get the electric circuit right, but eventually we all managed it. Then we went back to the Liquid Nitrogen where they had re-frozen all of the lollies and we got one each! There was also some time for questions.

After that brilliant visit I think, that everyone enjoyed, I think we have definitely inspired some future scientists!
