Year 6 visit Gordon Brown

On Friday 19th May, after four days of exams year 6 came to school dressed for a day of thrills and adventure at the Gordon Brown Centre. We were all enthusiastic about the trip including Mr Davies, Mrs Montgomerie and Mrs Hussey.

As soon as we got there, as the weather was really hot, we had to put our bags under a shelter, but the shelter was in the rabbit enclosure so it took us 20 minutes just to put our bags under the shelter!

Reluctantly leaving the rabbit enclosure, we travelled into the woods and we were all fitted with safety helmets before heading to the low ropes. Some people found them tricky whilst it was easy for others. First of all we started with a demonstration from our guide, Joe; he showed us how to move on all the harder parts of the course but there was catch, if our foot touched the floor you would have to go back to the previous base. We couldn’t wait to start.

We all made a line and we were off! people at the front of the line were already half way through before some people had even got passed 1st base! Of course on the first activity Mrs Hussey wobbled the wire which we were standing on just to make it harder. Three bases in, we came to a difficult bridge building challenge, we had to climb across a log and half way down there was a gap, we had 2 planks to build a bridge for the gap; the gap was much bigger than the planks. Either side of the logs there were 2 stumps, so we put the planks across them and it worked! Close to the end, there was a rock-climbing wall, majority of year 6 struggled on the climbing wall and it was the biggest challenge for most.

After that, we were going back to the rabbit enclosure for an early lunch the long way past the donkeys. There were only 2 donkeys. We were allowed to stroke them and feed with the leaves from the trees. Next to the donkey field was the goat field, there were around 10 goats in all! After we all left the goat field we all went to the rabbit enclosure to have lunch.

After lunch, we went back into the woods for laser tag. We had sensors on our hats, which we had to aim at. The gun wasn’t made out of plastic or rubber, it was made out of metal which was amazing and everyone loved the idea of having a gun that actually looked like a gun! We got split into 2 teams, the red team and the blue team each person had 20 lives and when you lost all of your lives you would have to go back to the benches in the middle and sit out. The blue team was: Mrs Hussey, Mrs Montgomerie, Alex, Nana, Charlotte, Lewis, Finley, Hope, Guy and Liran. On the red team was: Mr Davies, Ella, Luke, Emily, Max, Fletcher, Finlay and Elspeth. We started on opposite sides of the woods and when the whistle blew we all made a run to the next obstacle and hide behind it and try to shoot the other team. At the end of the first 2 games the score was 1-1. Then the 3rd and 4th games were like fortnite you had to start the fence and try to get back to the middle. After that the score was 3-1 to the blue team. The last game was very different to the other games we had just played. Joe put a ball in the middle and you had to run to it from either side, pick it up and throw it into the other teams side without getting killed. The red team won that game, so in the end the score was 3-2 to the blue team.

We all had a great day and loved every moment of it, it made the stress of SATS worthwhile.
