Hampshire Music Concert

Mr White and Mrs de Souza visited us from Hampshire Music Service. They introduced us to the violin, viola, cello and electric double bass. They played a variety of pieces on each instrument to show us the technical abilities of the string family. One of the pieces they played was ‘The Tortoise’, when they sped this up the school recognised that it was the Can Can!

They then added a mute to the bridge of their instruments.  We could recognise that this made the piece of music sound softer and quieter.  This is because the mute stops some of the vibration.

We learnt about ternary form, which is a musical sandwich. A good example of this is ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’ which we then sang, half of the room sang the first and last verse and the other half sang the middle verse.

Next, we had to clap or tap along in time to another piece of music. We had to clap when Mrs de Souza played the piano and then tap when Mr White played the electric double bass. They said we were very good at changing between them quickly!

We then learnt two songs ‘Drunken Sailor’ and ‘Oh Sinner Man’. One side of the room sang ‘Drunken Sailor’ while the other side of the room sang ‘Oh Sinner Man’ and then we swapped! Mr White and Mrs de Souza were very impressed with our singing!

Finally, Mr White and Mrs de Souza played one last piece of music which was American Country. At the end when Mrs de Souza swung her bow around her head, we all had to shout ‘Yeehaw!’
