Chris Thomas - Storyteller
To kick off our 'One World' Literacy week, we welcomed Storyteller Chris Thomas into school.
Willow Class enjoyed stories from Western Europe including, from Germany, 'The Elves and the Shoemaker' and 'The Wolf and the 7 Kids'. From England they listened to 'The Magic Porridge Pot' and talked about the fact that this story is retold and adapted all around the world, for example, in Italy they put spaghetti in the pot!
Beech Class listened to stories from Eastern Europe. From Russia Chris told the story of 'Cat, Sparrow and Little Geeko'. When the character Old Witch Bony Legs was introduced the children spotted that this story had similarities to Hansel and Gretel, which they have been studying in class. From the Hungarian Plain the children listened to 'The Rooster and the Diamond Button'. Quinn said, "My favourite was the rooster as he kept annoying the Turkish Sultan." Evie quoted, "I liked Cat, Sparrow and Little Geeko as I really liked the character Little Geeko."
Chestnut Class listened to stories from South America. From Venezuela, the story of 'How the Birds got their Feathers' followed by 'How the first stars were seen' from the Inca Tribe of Peru. From Brazil Chris told the story of 'Rabbit and Coyote' and to end their session the story of 'The Grasshopper and the Fox'.
Finally, Oak Class enjoyed stories from Africa. Their first story was 'Son of a God' who was half man; half spider and he had to collect three things in return for a box of stories. The afternoon ended with the story 'A Poor Man and his Bowl'.
Why not ask your child to retell and share these stories with you?
