Newman Court

Cliddesden Primary and Newman Court Resource Centre have forged a local community link. Newman Court Resource Centre is a day centre for adults with dementia, and is situated within our local community. As a school we believe it is important for children to engage with the local community and understand their place within it.

We have visited Newman Court several times and the impact on both the children and adults at the centre has been incredible and invaluable. Children and adults alike have gained so much from the visits and activities which have taken place.

We are looking forward to many more planned activities and visits in the next school year.

In Oak Class, ten children went to Newman Court. We were with an adult who had dementia. I was partnered up with a lovely woman called Betty. I showed her my ‘In the Spotlight’ objects and it clicked back memories from when she was my age. Betty told me that she had three brothers and three sisters; her eldest brother named Frank went to war and sadly died about a year after. Betty was the second eldest in her family; she is still knitting from when she learnt at a very young age. At the end I asked questions that we had and as you already know we have found out that her name is Betty and she had 3 sisters and 3 brothers. I asked if she could be a character in a film, TV show or book who would she be. She would be a princess. I asked if she could meet a person dead or alive, fictional or real, who would it be. Betty would like to meet her family. Two of the questions I asked were about being young. The final question I asked her was to describe her perfect day. Betty’s perfect day would be to see her husband again.

Overall I really enjoyed the day and I learnt lots.

On Tuesday 24th November 2015, 10 children went to Newman Court.  When we were there we showed them our ‘In the Spotlight’ objects. Each child got to show one or two people their objects. I went to two people, one was called Jeff and the other Muriel, although I have learnt a lot about her; these are just a few of those things. Firstly, she has seven brothers and three sisters. Secondly, if she could be a character it would be somebody from an animal show. If she could anybody, dead or alive, it would be an old friend. Muriel had one wish, which was to have good legs so she could walk around more often. When she was younger all she wanted to do was get a job, it didn’t matter what job though. Finally, Muriel’s perfect day would be to go to the beach with her friends.

I enjoyed visiting Newman Court; but the part I most enjoyed was learning about Jeff and Muriel.
