Oak Class visit Winchester

On Tuesday 23rd January, Oak class visited Winchester as a part of their ‘Who Do you Think You Are?’ topic. The aim of the trip was to discover how the Vikings and Anglo-Saxons changed our local area. We were lucky enough to have a guided tour of Winchester Cathedral during which we found out how small the original Anglo Saxon Cathedral was and when it was replaced by the Cathedral we see today. We also found out about Saint Swithun and our guide explained how important his story is to Winchester. Maybe one of Oak Class could tell you the story? Many of our first Kings and Queens are buried in the Cathedral and our guide told us the history of each of them.

Winchester Museum

We walked up the high street, where the remains of the original town layout can still be seen, to the Museum where we became Viking spies, our objective was to find as much information about Anglo-Saxon Winchester as possible. We were told all the information we found would be used to send a report back to our fellow Vikings who were planning to invade Winchester. We were tasked with finding as much information as possible including: what kind of weaponry was used, what clothing was worn by the different classes of people, were coins used, if so how, who were the leaders, did they have a king, who was he, what kind of man is he, how is the town defended and how do Anglo-Saxons communicate. We found so many interesting facts and are now looking forward to writing our invasion reports.
