Zoolab visit Chestnut Class

On Monday 8th January, Lucy from ‘Zoolab’ visited Chestnut Class. Lucy brought in a range of animals which could be found in the rainforest.

The first creature we were introduced to was a giant snail called Percy and he can be found living on the forest floor in Africa. Lucy told us many interesting facts including that Percy could grow to the size of a football and weigh up to 3kg! He also had 10,000 teeth on his tongue!

The next creature we met was a cockroach from Madagascar. He wasn’t an ordinary cockroach- he was a hissing cockroach! Charlie the cockroach hisses so that he can scare away snakes. He is known as a dustbin creature and can eat anything apart from plastic, glass and metal.

The third animal we were lucky enough to see up close was a tree frog called ‘Neville’. Tree frogs live in the canopy layer of the rainforest where it is sunny. Tree frogs love to jump and climb so he had to stay inside his box. Did you also know that they create special grease which is like a glue to help them stick to things?

We also got to handle a millipede called Matilda- she had 22o legs which felt like a hairbrush! She was completely blind and in the rainforest the only way to protect herself is to curl up into a very tight ball.

The last animal we got to hold and stroke was a snake! The snake was a corn snake and would not be found in the rainforest. The snakes in the rainforest are venomous so we were glad they didn’t visit us!

Chestnut Class had a great time handling and holding the animals up close- we are looking forward to our new topic and learning more about rainforests.
