Chestnut Class Story Endings Parent Workshop
During One World Week, Chestnut Class have been focusing on story endings. The children guessed the ending for ‘Princess Of The Springs’, a Brazilian folk tale. Then they wrote their ending for ‘Mariana And The Merchild’, a Chilean folk tale. They worked out what a story ending needs to do and talked about how different endings can change how the reader feels.
On Friday 6th March, some of the children’s parents came into class to share their ideas. Everyone listened to ‘The Star-Wife’, from South America. It was full of beautiful language but very sad.The children told their parents about story endings. They all decided to re-write the ending to make the reader feel hopeful and happy.
They began by writing an amazing sentence inspired by the story. The children then worked with an adult to develop their ideas before writing in their books.
Here are some examples of their alternate endings:
The Star Wife
WALT (we are learning to): to write an alternative story ending.
The star wife and the ugly boy were still in love inside of their hearts. One day the star wife had a great idea that they could work towards to stay together. She slumped over the rocking chair and was suddenly consumed in deep thoughts.
“How am I going to ask him?” she wondered. “Will he go along with it, I hope he does.”
Meanwhile, strangely enough, the boy was taking a stroll through the village woods, he was feeling sad and blue. Suddenly a thought came to him and he yelled, “alas!” he rushed down to the star wife and as he approached the door ……

During the night the Star Wife goes and opens the creaky door. She goes to get her own boyfriend in her real world. She showed him her star boyfriend and they began to argue. They both loved the star wife but the star boyfriend loved her the most.
The argument woke up the villagers, who were very shocked to witness the fight of the farmer and the star. The villagers were scared and couldn’t go back to bed.
After that everyone wanted to be the Star Wife’s friend, but when they touched her boyfriend they died. It was a mystery and then the farmer said, “he’s evil” and he was right…..

As she flew off into the murky night sky the ugly man started weeping. It was so silent that he could hear his own salty tears fall onto the mountain side. He had just suffered a significant blow into his so called generous heart. The lady glanced back wistfully into his long-loved heart. They both knew they had dropped a chance that was pleading to be taken. It felt like they were walking closer and a brick wall had suddenly fallen into their path. He lumbered back down the tear covered mountain top, he suddenly heard a whispering noise between the trees. He felt distraught. As he slumped back onto his flea ridden bed, the moon faded. They both knew they were betraying each other’s hearts as he finally shut his withered eyes the whispering became deafeningly loud. He covered his ears as the speaking reached crescendo. Through his shattered window he saw a ghostly figure flying around his ramshackle hut. The howling night was getting colder.

But now at night he leaves his empty hut broken hearted. Until one night he spotted an empty silver gleaming house on the top of a big hill. He rushed home to get his camping gear because he wanted to hike up the mountain. That night he made it half way up the mountain when he stopped for a nap.
The next fresh morning had arrived quicker than he expected. After a seemingly endless journey up the mountain he arrived at the spooky silver steps to his house. As he laid his foot on the first step he shivered, he was cold but well wrapped up. He ran up the last few steps as fast as the wind.
